People who call themselves Old Believers saved themselves from destruction and violence by fleeing to the outskirts of the country. Some of them ended up on the west bank of Peipus. Next to the Estonians, they have endured everything that has happened to our country, all while still preserving their faith, unique culture and way of life. For three centuries they have been ready for the coming end of the world. Each day has been lived as if the next one might not arrive.

Standing by the Forest 1998
We don't have high mountains or dark valleys, so the forest has become a safe haven from invaders, diseases or other people. For many, the forest is a source of income, for others something like a sanctuary or rather a clinic. Twice in history it has supported the national currency. The most diverse people think about the forest in this film; their perceptions are opposite, but for everyone the forest is something very important.
