Drowned in Oblivion 2007    star_border 7
Le Cercle des noyés is the name given in Mauritania to black political prisoners imprisoned from 1987 in the old colonial fortress of Oualata. This film touches on the fragile process of unveiling memories by one of these former prisoners who remembers his story and that of his companions. In a visual echo, the places of their confinement come one after another denuded from any traces of that past.

The SAS (Section Administrative Spécialisée) were created in 1956 by the French army during the Algerian war to pacify "the natives". During the day, the SAS were used as treatment centres and at night as torture centres, in order to crush the Algerian resistance. The SAS were inhabited by French soldiers and auxiliaries (harkis, goumiers) and their families. At independence in 1962, a few families of auxiliaries stayed on; the vacant buildings were occupied by families of martyrs awaiting the better days promised by the new Algeria. 46 years later, the SAS at Laperrine, in the Bouira region, still exists, a unique place inhabited by people who have taken refuge there. They have been joined by farmers fleeing the terrorism of the 90s. They all live as best they can in a place they did not choose, suffering the consequences of war.

Alimentation Générale 2005    star_border 6.3
In Epinay-sur-Seine, in the neighborhood called « la Source », Ali’s grocery store is the only shop still in business of the decayed shopping center. It’s also the only place left for the forsaken inhabitants of the surrounding tower blocks to meet, a shelter where they can get together and exchange. This documentary film takes us into the everyday life of a small grocery store. As customers pass by, Ali, the charismatic shopkeeper, also part-time singer, is benevolently welcoming them. This moving and often amusing chronicle shows the importance of such a place, a small shop “around the corner”, in the middle of the Projects, where in spite of difficulties and poverty, people still share user-friendliness, laughter, human warmth.
