The amendment in the law, making it compulsory for one-third of the Gram Panchayat representatives to be women, is not received favourably by the ruling Sarpanch of the village, Thakur Ratan Singh. Although he puts up a front of being in favour of the idea, along with his son Inder Singh, he conspires to field wives of friends, whom he hopes he can control through their husbands and through the caste network. Vidya, wife of Bhanwar Singh who is indebted to the Thakur, is one of the newly elected women Panchayat members. Vidya, who is educated, notices that the political empowerment of women is only on paper and in reality decision-making still continues to be with the manipulative old guard. Vidya decides it is time for a change.

A UNICEF-sponsored six-film anthology depicting childhood horrors around the world. "Hassane" - a malnourished child in Niger needs help from the doctors, but village traditions prohibit it. "Liouba" - a child escapes to the forest after a beating by his alcoholic mother, but the games he plays in the forest mirror his troubles at home. "Boy" - a child faces discrimination as the only white student at his school. "Carmelo" - in Bogota a child living on the streets fights to survive. "Oca" - when his twelve year old brother dies free-diving in the Philippines, seven year old Oca must take his place on the job. "L'enfance de l'art" - children living and playing in a war zone are touched by violence.

The Children of Soong Ching Ling is a 1984 Canadian short documentary film directed by Gary Bush. It is about the humanitarian work in support of children by Mrs. Soong Ching-ling, or Madame Sun Yat-sen, in particular the orphanage she sponsored. China has 350 million children under the age of 15. Understanding their problems is essential to understanding China. This revealing documentary vividly conveys the experiences China's children are undergoing and shows how the Chinese are attempting to provide their children with the health, education and skills they will need in the modern world. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.

Friends of the Family 1982
This animated film carries a positive message about the importance of helping others. Friends of the Family centres around a sister and brother who awaken each morning to a secure and comfortable environment where all their needs are taken care of. When plans to collect for UNICEF are discussed over breakfast, the boy questions the reasons for doing so. A sweep of the animator's brush sends the children into a world they have never before seen, a world without even the necessities of life. Through the experience, they realize the purpose of raising funds for foreign aid and at the same time learn how children can make a worthwhile contribution to their brothers and sisters around the world.

It's the Same World 1981
It's the Same World is a 1980 American short documentary film produced by Dick Young. Shot on location in various parts of the world, it depicts children in the Philippines who can neither hear nor speak, a brain-damaged child in India, an Ethiopian cripple learning a trade so that he can support his family with dignity, and a Mexican polio victim, whose mother uses therapy to help her daughter walk. Also featured is Terry Fox, the Canadian youth who lost his right leg to cancer and yet set out to run across Canada. The world of the disabled is not a special world, but the same world in which we all live. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.
