Ciulei’s second feature recalls the best of Fritz Lang and Michael Curtiz in its WWII-era espionage tale, set on a barge transporting Nazi munitions up the Danube. Ciulei himself givers a superb performance as Mihai, the barge captain forced to navigate the heavily mined waters along with his new bride, Ana (Irina Petrescu). As the journey wears on, Mihai becomes increasingly suspicious of one of his crew, ex-convict Toma (Lazar Vrabie), and his intentions towards Ana. But Toma has a far graver—and potentially deadly—secret to conceal.

During the summer of 1944, while Romanians turn weapons against Nazis, Mihai, an orphan teenager whose parents died in a bombing, tries to enlist in order to fight in the front line but he discovers that former police commissioner Potra tortured and beaten prisoners, including his father, who was political detained. This attempt at a plot conforms of course to the conventions of romantic musical comedies, resulting in a film full of song and dance. With memorable song titles like “Yes, I am an umbrella” and “Let’s play my guitar”, this Romanian-Soviet co-production is as silly as it is irresistible.

This movie follows the story of a young man - Mihai Brad, who works for a industrial plant. He reaches a turning point in his life when his bosses discuss his admittance in the Young Worker Union, a communist organization, which can help propel his career forward. Mihai calls to remembrance his early days of his job after leaving his village with dreams of having his own house and a decent life. He first starts low as a unqualified worker and each month he saves all his money. The UTM organization tries to convince him to improve his skills become a qualified worker but he refuses saying that he soon wants to go back to his village and be a shepherd.

Mihai is expelled from college and sentenced to prison for a DUI accident. After his term in prison, he is hired at a construction site to be "re-educated"

Vulpașin is desperatley in love with Nastasia, but she is partial to Luca, which works at a factory outside the slum they live in ("accros the lifting gate").
