Jean is a family man and factory worker who dreams of becoming a songwriter. Pinning his hopes on his teenage daughter, Marva, he takes her to singing contests in which the awkward and overweight girl struggles to belt out a tune. When Jean is suddenly fired because of cut backs, he is ashamed and even more desperate to have his daughter succeed. In a chance meeting Jean kidnaps the most famous pop star in the country and holds her hostage demanding to be heard by the music industry. Catching the attention of the media and the eyes of the nation, Jean and Marva realize that the show must go on until everyone is famous.

The 1950s. A family has its annual family reunion to commemorate the anniversary of mother's death. People drink and eat heavily and after a while all restrictions are lost. Family members start venting old frustrations, discussions and tensions. Eventually one homosexual young man gets depressed and a drama escalates.

Malpertuis is the name of an old, rambling mansion which is in reality a labyrinth where characters from Greek mythology are imprisoned by the bedridden Cassavius. He manages to keep them, as well as his nephew and niece, prisoners even after his death, through a binding testament. As Jan, the nephew, unravels the mystery, he discovers that he cannot escape the house because Malpertuis is far more significant than he was led to believe.

Cheb moves into a squat with two friends. One evening he learns of his mother's death. His father especially thanks him for the many postcards he sent to Morocco from Brussels. His mother had kept them all carefully. Cheb then wonders whether he should not return to Morocco. In the meantime he does go to work in the Brussels Metropole hotel. There a surprise awaits him. There are many layers in Cheb. You can view the film as an ordinary faits diverse but also as a subtle play between the real Brussels and the Brussels of the postcards. Didden plays that game devilishly well. Stylistically, he dares to take more risks than his predecessors. You notice that when he shouts out Cheb's insecurity with a moving and frolicking camera.
