Lin Hsiao-yang tries to keep her family together while working as a waitress at Kentucky Fried Chicken and going to night school. With no mother and her father currently working out of town, it is up to Lin Hsiao-yang to take care of her younger siblings, who are slipping into a life of crime.
This documentary captures the Lanling Theatre Troupe's 1985 production of Nine Songs on 8mm film, following the troupe's rehearsals and actual performance and meticulously capturing the vibrant energy of Taiwan's experimental theater movement.
Founded in 1980, Lan Ling Theater is the first experimental theater company in Taiwan and the main promoter of the small theater movement. The troupe was disbanded in 1991. Since then, every ten years, everyone starts to re-perform together. In April 1983, “Experimental Actors Studio" premiered in Taipei. In May 2018, they delivered four performances at the National Theater. In the next four years, they toured nine cities and had 20 performances. The original class reunion turned out to be more like a graduation trip.
With Taiwan remaining in the grip of martial law in 1982, a group of filmmakers from that country set out to establish a cultural identity through cinema and to share it with the world. This engaging documentary looks at the movement's legacy.
