Narrated from the perspective of a man burdened with deep remorse, pain and his inner demons, the story concerns his decision to euthanize his terminally ill mother with painkillers.
Max wakes up one morning and discovers that his wife Hélène has left him in his sleep, without a word, taking their two children with her. He doesn't understand. The nights drag on, his demons get involved, he chooses to face them and to anchor himself in reality. He probes his feelings, revisits from top to bottom the artifice of his life. Max ends up rediscovering his love for Hélène and decides to win her back. But isn't it already too late?
Set against the background of the French Revolution and based on Victor Hugo's classic novel this is the story of Jean Valjean who is sent to prison for stealing a loaf of bread and is released after nineteen years. He meets and cares for a beautiful but poverty-stricken young girl named Fantine who has daughter Cosette. After Fantine's death Valjean brings Cosette up but he is haunted by Javert - a policeman whose search for Valjean has become an obsession.
