Kotreshi is an intelligent boy from a lower caste who comes first in the seventh standard and brings pride to his community. The upper-class Gowdas, however, attempt to suppress his growth.

The movie was based on the novel Bete written by Kum. Veerabhadrappa. The movie was later remade in Tamil as Annakili Sonna Kathai.
